Home Occupation Business

Home-based businesses are an important part of the city's economy. Depending on the nature of your home business, it may require City approval through a home occupation permit. If your home business does not bring customers to your residence or you do not employ a person who does not live at your residence, you do not need a home occupation permit.  If your home business does bring customers to your residence or you do employ a person who does not live at your residence, you need a home occupation permit before you can operate your business.

A home occupation permit is granted by the City of Coon Rapids Planning Commission and is good for two years.  A home occupation permit can be renewed through administrative review and does not need Planning Commission approval. 

A home business, regardless if it requires a home occupation permit, can operate a total of 30 hours per week and can occupy no more than 400 square feet in the residence.


Prohibited Home Businesses

The following home business are prohibited in the City of Coon Rapids: motor vehicle repair, body shops, machine shops, welding business, ammunition manufacturing, flea markets, motor vehicle sales, firearm sales and tattoo parlors.
