Rental Properties

All rental properties must be licensed by the City of Coon Rapids before tenants move in to the unit – including single family homes.

The rental licensing process, from City staff receiving the application to the license being issued, is approximately 4 to 6 weeks (we allow 2 weeks for background check processing before scheduling the inspection, and the inspection schedule fills quickly).

  • Submit a completed application, in person, at City Hall.
  • Submit one background check form for each owner. A photocopy of a government issued identification is required for each background check.
  • Submit a copy of the Crime Free Multi-Housing course certificate of completion or proof of registration for a Crime Free Multi-Housing course.
  • Pay applicable licensing fees.
  • Pass a property inspection which will be scheduled after the application has been submitted in full.

The rental license must be renewed each year. A property inspection will be scheduled on a 1, 2, or 3 year cycle based on inspection results.
