A new initiative at the Coon Rapids Civic Center makes a commitment to reduce waste. The goal is to be a "Zero Waste Facility" to help reduce greenhouse gases. As part of the new zero waste initiative, Civic Center customers are encouraged to make choices that cut down on the amount of garbage produced through events held at the facility, such as graduation parties, weddings and other special occasions.Staff suggest that renters use compostable or organic service-ware or reusable plates and flatware. The facility also provides special sorting containers for organics, recycling and trash, which helps guests sort their waste properly at the end of an event. A zero waste event produces less than one ounce of trash per person, which is much less than a traditional event.
