Here are some highlights for this week….
Exciting news for the Coon Rapids Ice Center
The event last Friday to welcome the MN Blue Ox hockey team to the Coon Rapids Ice Center went very well, and this new team has gained quite a bit of attention in the online world. See a recap of Blue Ox management talking about this new team at the Ice Center in this CTN Story on the City website.
Night to Unite – A Huge Success
The Police Department extends a huge thank you to the hundreds of residents who hosted a Night to Unite party on Tuesday night. Several teams of officers, fire fighters and other City staff visited dozens of parties. 110 parties were registered in the city, including a new party at the soccer complex: A Multi-Cultural Night to Unite. This event helps to build community, with an emphasis on getting to know your neighbors and building police-community partnerships.
Thursday, August 3 marks the final outdoor concert of the summer series, featuring Church of Cash (Johnny Cash Tribute). The band will perform at 7 p.m. Rain is in the forecast; the show will go on rain or shine. There is a covered pavilion area with picnic tables to keep people dry. View more information on the City wesite.
SPAM ALERT! From the IT Dept.
Employees have been doing a great job of recognizing spam and phishing emails and either letting IT know about them or just deleting them immediately. Keep up the good work, and just to keep it fresh in our minds, Dave wants to present one to you that was caught recently.
The email you see below came to our general email address. Misty Bowe is a real person working for a real company called Excelsior LLC; however, it’s a phishing attempt by someone else to gain access to login credentials to our network or maybe dupe us into seeing some other company’s web site, or maybe some other scam. Can you find the clues that are an indication that it’s bogus?
- The first thing I did was hold my cursor over the hyperlink address at the bottom of the email. You can’t see that here, but in the original email, the actual URL link behind the text was firstname.lastname@example.org.
- You also can’t see this in my copy and paste of the email text, but there was an attached .PDF document called PPTX.#.PDF. That’s a very strange name which does not indicate what it really is.
- The grammar and punctuation is pretty bad. See the places I’ve highlighted.
- According to the web site for Excelsior LLC, Misty Bowe is a vice president. I don’t think she would send a business email without a signature that contains full contact information.
- Lastly, the body of the mail is urging you to use your work/office password to access the file. Why would a document coming from some OTHER company be able to be accessed with YOUR password?
Even if you didn’t recognize any other signs, be very careful with any email that urges you to enter private information of any kind.
Again, keep up the good work in recognizing these bad emails.
